What is a domain name?
In order to be found, your website needs a unique "address" that is typed into the address bar on
someone's browser. There are several different ways of doing this:
To have a website on someone else's domain the address would be something like:
http://www.someoneelsesdomain.com/yourselectednamehere
or what is known as a "third level domain" which would read like:
http://yourselectednamehere.someoneelsesdomain.com/
When you have your own domain name, the address would look something like:
http://yourselectednamehere.com
or http://www.yourselectednamehere.com
Although the first two methods of addressing your website are usually less expensive options than
having your own domain name, and people can reach your site by using them, there are some
disadvantages to using these. The advantages of having your own domain name usually outweigh the
difference in cost.
Some of the advantages to having your own domain name are:
- Your own domain name makes you look a bit bigger and more credible.
- Domain names are easier for your visitor to remember and type into their browsers.
- Some search engines only index sites which have their own domain names.
- You are not tied into someone else's domain permanently and not dependent on whether or not they renew their name.
- If you choose to change hosts you can do so seamlessly and do not lose any marketing you may have done for your web site.
- You may, depending on your host, have more control over scripts that can be used on your site, access to logs, etc.
Domain names are granted on a first-come, first-served basis from a master database and can be registered through a number of registrars internationally.
The most common first level domain extensions are .com, .net, and .org however there are over 300 official international and country code domains...over 75 of these require no residency requirement. If a name you have selected is not available in one of the popular extensions, it may still be available in some of these other domain extensions.
The fees for registering international domains vary according to which one it is.
